Voter turnout in the Saxony-Anhalt state election on Sunday climbed to a record level, according to projections by public broadcasters ARD and ZDF.
Around 78% of eligible voters took part in the ballot, according to the figures, which is the highest turnout in a Saxony-Anhalt state election since reunification, when East Germany joined West Germany after the fall of the Berlin wall in1989. The previous record of 71.5% was set in 1998.
Turnout rose sharply compared with the previous election in 2021, when the final figure stood at 60.3%.
That figure was already surpassed on the afternoon of election day, before postal votes were counted, according to an interim result from the state returning officer.
The political mood during this state election campaign had been highly polarized.
