A chance of strong to severe thunderstorms could impact Louisville in the afternoon and evening on Aug. 1, according to the National Weather Service in Louisville.

While the main severe risk will be between early afternoon and sunset, NWS Louisville officials warn multiple waves of showers are possible throughout the day. Non-severe storms will pass through Louisville in the morning.

Damaging winds are the most likely severe hazard, with reasonable maximum wind speeds reaching around 60 mph. There is also a chance of a few spin-up tornadoes, especially east of Interstate 65. Flash flooding is possible during isolated periods of heavy rain, but NWS Louisville has low confidence in flooding potential, adding that "widespread or high impact flash flooding is not expected at this time."

NWS Louisville advises residents to enable weather alerts on their phones and find sturdy shelter in the event of a severe thunderstorm.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, the forecast for one of the Kentucky's most anticipated political events — the Fancy Farm Picnic in Fancy Farm, Kentucky — may see some rain.

NWS Paducah predicts a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms before 4 p.m., followed by a slight chance of showers between 4 and 5 p.m. The daytime chance of precipitation will sit around 20%. In the evening, there is a 20% chance of showers between midnight and 5 a.m.

Conditions will remain partly sunny with a high near 81 during the day. West winds are anticipated to move between 8 and 11 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph. In the evening, it will be mostly cloudy with a low near 68 and west winds at 5 to 9 mph.
