Los Angeles police officers opened fire on a person they say was armed with a pruning pole with a blade on the end in Boyle Heights Monday.
The incident was reported just before 10 a.m. in the 600 block of Gillette Street, between Bridge Street and Prospect Park, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The suspect's family had called 911 to report the man's behavior.
LAPD said the dispatch call went out as a mental health incident involving a man armed with a metal pipe. Police said responding officers found the man armed with a large tree trimmer with an approximate 12-inch serrated blade.
"He failed to comply with orders to drop the pole and continued advancing towards officers. As the officers redeployed, an officer involved shooting occurred," LAPD said in a statement.
The suspect was struck by gunfire and taken to a local hospital where he later died.
No officers were injured during the incident.
LAPD is now turning to video as the investigation into the police shooting continues.
"Part of that process would include interviews with the involved officers, any body-worn video that they would have, any other video in the area, as well as interviews with any of the involved persons that were here at scene," said LAPD Capt. Mike Bland.
LAPD's Force Investigation Team and the L.A. County District Attorney's Office are heading up the probe into the shooting.
