The national jewelry chain whose advertising slogan is "Every Kiss Begins With Kay" has kissed the Meriden Mall goodbye in favor of a spot in neighboring Cheshire.
It wasn't immediately clear when Kay Jewelers closed its Meriden Mall store or when the chain opened a new store at Cheshire's The Shops at Stone Bridge. Officials with Kay were not immediately available for comment.
But visitors to the mall store on Wednesday were greeted with steel gates across both entrances of Kay's former mall space, located on the upper level near the retail complex's Center Court. Conversely, shoppers at The Shops at Stone Bridge found a "Now Open" sign at Kay's store in the retail center, a space next to Harvey & Lewis Opticians.
The news that Kay Jewelers had signed a lease for space in the Cheshire retail center came out in April.
Kay is owned by Akron, Ohio-based Signet Jewelers, which has over 2,600 stores in the United States, Ireland and England. Signet operates such high profile jewelry brands as Zales, Jared and Kay.
The opening and closing leave Kay with15 stores in Connecticut, although only three of the locations - Waterbury, Meriden and Milford - are in New Haven County.
This is the second time this year that The Shops at Stone Bridge has lured a tenant from the Meriden Mall. Earlier this year, discount retailer TJ Maxx relocated from the mall's upper level to the Cheshire retail center..
