A bipartisan group of lawmakers sent a letter on July 31 to President Donald Trump, requesting federal disaster assistance for areas of the Fox Valley left reeling from severe damage caused by the Appleton-Menasha tornado that struck the area on July 27.

The lawmakers are requesting aid for Appleton, Menasha, Fox Crossing and Neenah.

"The people of the Fox Valley are resilient and hardworking; with timely federal support, they can recover more quickly and fully," the lawmakers wrote, noting extensive damage to homes and businesses that left some residents without power for an extended period of time. The advisory to boil water ended for most areas hit by the tornado early Aug. 1.

The City of Menasha declared a local state of disaster and Gov. Tony Evers declared a state of emergency, activating the Wisconsin National Guard July 30 to assist with relief efforts in Winnebago County.

"While it is a blessing that no fatalities have been reported, many families have lost homes or sustained major property damage," lawmakers wrote, adding that repair efforts will place "substantial burdens" on local and state resources.

The state, in recent months, has hit roadblocks in receiving federal disaster aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. While Trump approved a major disaster declaration and relief package in July stemming from severe flooding in April, four counties were denied public assistance funds.

Different from individual assistance funds, which help individuals and families with repair costs, public assistance funds focus more on helping local governments recover from infrastructure damage. At the time, Evers said Trump was "playing politics" with disaster relief.

Evers also challenged the Trump administration's denial of public assistance for counties impacted by severe flooding in August 2025. FEMA denied his appeal, and Evers asked Wisconsin's members of Congress to persuade Trump to reconsider.

The letter is signed by state representatives and senators from the impacted area, including: Reps. Ron Tusler, Shae Sortwell, Joy Goeben, Lee Snodgrass, Dean Kaufert, Lori Palmeri, Nate Gustafson Dave Murphy; and Senators Andre Jacque, Kristin Dassler-Alfheim and Rachel Cabral-Guevara.
