The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 313 will host an event featuring Vietnam-era Huey helicopters in Battle Creek this month.
The event kicks off with the arrival of three Bell HU-1 Iroquois helicopters, also known as "Hueys," at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 21.
The Huey helicopters are recognized for their significant role during the Vietnam War, utilized for medical evacuation, troop transport and other missions. Attendees will have a chance to see the helicopters up close and speak with the pilots and crew throughout the event.
The schedule includes an opening ceremony at noon on Aug. 21, featuring President of the Vietnam Veterans National organization Tom Burke as the keynote speaker. Unique activities such as a Living History Flight Experience, where visitors can take a flight aboard a Huey, will be offered.
Participants can also learn about the helicopter's historical role in Vietnam and purchase commemorative event shirts and challenge coins.
Additional features of the event include the presence of a gunship and troop carrier. A speaker will recount the history of a gunship featured in the film "We Were Soldiers," alongside a veteran who experienced the events depicted in the book and movie "Friendly Fire."
The event is from Aug. 21-23 at the American Legion Post 257 in Battle Creek.
Transportation will be available to and from the "Wall that Heals," located directly across from the Huey landing zone.
