NORTHEAST WISCONSIN – New fast-charging stations for electric vehicles are planned in several communities across the region, including Reedsville, Random Lake, Fond du Lac, Lomira and Chilton.

Gov. Tony Evers and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation announced Sept. 8 that 42 locations statewide will receive grants to build fast, reliable electric vehicle charging stations. The grants are supported by $25 million from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program, part of the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

WisDOT said it has awarded about $62 million so far to support 120 EV charging projects across Wisconsin. The agency said the latest round comes after the state funded charging stations at every 50-mile mark along key interstates and highways, which allowed Wisconsin to expand grants to additional highway corridors.

The latest grant list includes these local projects in Manitowoc, Sheboygan, Fond du Lac and nearby Calumet counties:

Reedsville: $910,260 for a Cenex near U.S. 10.

Random Lake: $627,640 for Random Lake Motel near State 57.

Fond du Lac: $609,926 for a BP near State 23.

Lomira: $636,446 for Hi-Way Hop near Interstate 41.

Chilton: $628,395 for Best Western Stanton Inn near U.S. 10.

The new stations are expected to be built along U.S. and state highway corridors that were not previously eligible for the Wisconsin Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Connecting Corridors Program. WisDOT said it considered factors such as location, potential for future development, pull-through parking spaces for larger EVs and extended business hours when choosing projects.

The stations are part of a broader effort to expand EV charging access for Wisconsin residents, visitors and travelers. WisDOT said 25 charging stations funded through earlier rounds are already operational.
