Two juveniles were arrested after San Francisco police said they recovered a loaded AR-style gun from an autonomous vehicle in the city's Richmond District last week.
According to the San Francisco Police Department, officers responded at about 3:52 a.m. Sept. 3 to the 800 block of 40th Avenue after receiving a report that two passengers inside the vehicle had a firearm.
Officers conducted what police described as a high-risk vehicle stop and detained the two passengers.
During a search of the vehicle, officers found a loaded AR-style rifle that police described as a ghost gun. Officers also recovered suspected marijuana and mace spray during searches of the juveniles.
Police said they developed probable cause to arrest both the male and female juveniles on suspicion of illegal firearm possession. They were booked into the Juvenile Justice Center.
Because both suspects are minors, SFPD did not release their names.
Police did not identify the autonomous vehicle company involved, and the department did not say who initially reported the firearm or whether the vehicle operator assisted officers during the incident.
The arrest is the latest criminal investigation involving autonomous vehicles in the Bay Area.
Earlier this year, police in San Mateo said Waymo employees alerted officers after observing teenagers drinking alcohol and firing an Orbeez toy gun from inside one of the company's robotaxis.
