As Rochester prepares to mark the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks with outdoor ceremonies Friday, the weather is expected to be calm and clear, much like it was on the day of the attacks.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, Friday in Rochester is expected to be sunny, with a high near 72 degrees. Clouds will increase overnight, with warmer weather expected Saturday and a high near 82. There is a chance of showers Saturday afternoon, while Sunday is expected to bring a 30% chance of showers, along with a high near 78.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. On Sept. 11, 2001, the lives of New Yorkers and people across the country changed forever after hijacked planes were flown into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, while a fourth plane crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the attacks, which had a profound impact on the United States and reshaped Lower Manhattan.
Congress designated Sept. 11 as Patriot Day in 2001 to honor those killed in the terrorist attacks. In 2009, federal law also designated Sept. 11 as the National Day of Service and Remembrance. Patriot Day is not a federal holiday.
Because it is not a federal holiday, Sept. 11 does not automatically result in closures for schools, banks, post offices, government offices or most businesses.
Patriot Day is observed each year on Sept. 11 to remember those killed in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
Federal law calls for the U.S. flag to be flown at half-staff on Sept. 11 and asks people to observe a moment of silence in honor of those who died.
Communities across New York will hold ceremonies, memorials and other events Friday to honor the victims and remember the events of Sept. 11, 2001.
