An Ariel Nomad with no roof or doors has done something that would put many modern SUVs to shame. The 260-plus-bhp off-roader tackled more than 1,700 miles across Morocco's Sahara Desert, enduring brutal temperatures and unforgiving terrain ranging from dunes and salt flats to rocky pistes without suffering a single breakdown. Aside from basic routine servicing, the Nomad needed little attention throughout the journey, making a strong case for itself as an exceptionally capable off-roader.
If one is familiar with the track-focused Ariel Atom, the Nomad is its off-road equivalent that has dust and rocks for breakfast. A Nomad owner intended to put his vehicle through its paces at the 2026 Morocco Desert Challenge in April, a rally-raid event, and Ariel did not hold back, as it offered the necessary support and assistance.
The off-roader performed with flying colors, proving itself to be a capable and rugged machine. Of course, it had some serious pieces of kit on it that ensured the car continued spewing mud without a hiccup. To prepare the Nomad for the demanding Moroccan terrain, its chassis was extensively upgraded.
Under the direction of Ariel Managing Director Henry Siebert-Saunders, who brings extensive off-road racing experience, the company's engineering, service, and fabrication teams worked together to create a dedicated package for the challenge. The upgrades were engineered specifically to withstand the extreme conditions the Nomad would encounter.
The suspension was revised to increase both ground clearance and track width, while stronger driveshafts were added alongside Öhlins dampers. Before being sent into the desert, the modified off-roader underwent thorough testing and tuning to ensure it was ready for the challenge. What was left? Service. Ariel said the Nomad only needed a few routine service items replaced, including the air filter, engine oil and brake pads. The suspension dampers also received routine servicing.
Speaking on the Nomad's performance, Siebert-Saunders said:
