THOMPSON - First responders found two people dead at the Orchard Drive home where a large fire broke out Sept. 1, state police said Saturday.
The bodies, believed to be those of adults, were discovered that night, according to Connecticut State Police. Investigators are still working to identify the individuals and notify their next of kin.
Crews responded to the home around 8:33 p.m. and found heavy fire, prompting a second alarm and a request for backup, according to the East Thompson Volunteer Fire Department. Firefighters knocked down the blaze about an hour after the initial call, the department said. More than a dozen emergency crews responded.
The fire department posted a news release on Facebook the following day but did not mention the bodies. The release also did not report any injuries or say whether residents were displaced.
State police said Saturday that the deaths were not initially announced because investigators had not yet confirmed them.
"We only include details in public statements once they are verified," a state police spokesperson said.
State police said Saturday that a firefighter also suffered a minor injury at the scene.
Officials are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire.
