A convicted murderer serving a life sentence was accused of trying to kill a correctional counselor during a violent attack at a Los Angeles County prison.
The incident occurred on Sept. 10 at California State Prison, Los Angeles County, in Lancaster around 8:30 a.m.
As Marcus Curry, 50, was leaving the victim's office, he was accused of attacking the counselor.
The victim suffered injuries and was taken to a medical facility for treatment. Curry was quickly apprehended by prison staff members and an improvised weapon was discovered at the scene.
Curry has been placed in restricted housing pending an investigation by the LAC Investigative Services Unit, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
The motive behind the attack remains under investigation.
He has been housed at the prison since March 28, 2000. He was sentenced to life with parole for possession of a firearm as a felon, a third-strike offense, and 20 years concurrent for assault with a semiautomatic firearm on a peace officer as a second striker with enhancements for use of a firearm and inflicting great bodily injury.
Additionally, he was sentenced in San Diego County on Feb. 13, 2002, to life with parole for second-degree murder as a third striker, with an enhancement for intentional discharge of a firearm causing great bodily injury or death.
The case will be referred to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office for attempted homicide charges.
The Lancaster prison opened in 1993 and houses approximately 3,250 minimum, medium, maximum and high-security custody inmates. The facility offers academic classes and vocational programs and employs approximately 1,700 people.
