Last week, we found out that a Suffolk County Superior Court judge will rule on whether the New Bedford Board of Health's 2-1 vote to deny a 1,500-ton-per-day trash transfer station will stand. The board's vote came in September 2025 to deny South Coast Renewables proposal to site the plant at 100 Duchaine Blvd.
Two months after officially reopening in its new home at 22 William St., Aviary Books owner Laura Ryan is settling into a storefront that has changed the possibilities for her business. The shop, now located in the former Drawing Room space, moved this spring from its previous second-floor location at 10 N. 6th St.
Lastly, artist-in-residence Dilge Dilsiz opened a new show at New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park. "What Remains" opened Sept. 4 at the park's Visitor Center and will remain on view through Oct. 10, including during October's AHA! Night. She said she focused on four historical areas in New Bedford, thinking about how each site has changed over time.

Armando Moniz won the second-to-last $1 million grand prize in the game. He chose the cash option and received a one-time payment of $650,000 before taxes.

A 21-year-old New Bedford man was killed following a serious accident involving a motor vehicle and a motorcycle Friday night, Sept. 4.
New Bedford Police and EMS were dispatched to the intersection of Walnut Street and S. Sixth Street. Upon arrival, police located a motorcycle in the intersection with significant damage and the motorcycle driver, 21-year-old Anthony Navarro Rodriguez of New Bedford, on the ground with significant injuries.

Though the totals changed a bit, the result of the recount in the Bristol District state representative's Democratic primary race was the same, with Edward M. Pacheco edging Stephen J. Medeiros by a handful of votes.
In Dartmouth, it was 2,104 for Pacheco and 2,082 for Medeiros, compared to the pre-recount totals of 2,105 for Pacheco and 2,084 for Medeiros. In New Bedford, where the pre-recount tally was 389 for Pacheco and 396 for Medeiros, each added a vote.

City councilors approved a seven-page Flock ordinance drafted by Councilor Shane Burgo that will subject any proposed future use of the technology to public scrutiny and the board's OK.
That tentative approval came in committee and was referred to the council's Sept. 24 regular session for full approval over two readings. The next full council meeting after Sept. 24 would be Oct. 8.

The New Bedford Whaling Museum's newest residents aren't quite on the scale of the whale skeletons overhead. But a northern puffer, blue crab, sea stars and other local marine creatures are helping visitors see the waters around them in a different way.
A 250-gallon saltwater aquarium in the museum's Jacobs Family Gallery offers a living connection to New Bedford Harbor and the SouthCoast's ecology.
