A rainy start to Sunday in Connecticut. Here's when dry weather returns.

Sunday starts on a wet note across Connecticut, but there is some good news for the second half of the day. Showers most likely will be during the morning, followed by gradual improvement from west to east as clouds break and a few peeks of sunshine return.

The steadiest rain should fall during the morning hours, with showers likely continuing into early afternoon along parts of the shoreline and across eastern Connecticut. A few heavier downpours are possible, and because some areas could receive around a half-inch or more of rain, temporary ponding on roads and in poor-drainage spots is possible.

The weather should improve noticeably after midday.

Western Connecticut is likely to see the first breaks in the clouds, with sunshine gradually spreading eastward. Temperatures will recover into the upper 70s to around 80 degrees, although the combination of clouds and lingering humidity will keep the day feeling more like late summer than early fall.

For outdoor plans, timing will be everything. The morning is the least favorable part of Sunday, while late afternoon and evening should offer much better conditions in most of the state. Any remaining showers should taper off during the evening, with skies becoming partly cloudy overnight.

Monday brings a much nicer start to the workweek. Expect mostly sunny skies, lower humidity and highs generally in the upper 70s. It should feel noticeably more comfortable after Sunday's damp weather.

Tuesday turns cooler, with sunshine and temperatures mainly in the lower to middle 70s.

Wednesday brings a modest warmup, with more sunshine and highs near 80 degrees.

The next chance for showers arrives Thursday, but Friday currently looks dry and cooler again.

Shoreline (including Stamford, Bridgeport, New Haven, New London): Showers (and a few downpours) likely during the morning, then clouds and some afternoon sunshine. Highs: 76-82.

Inland (including Danbury, Waterbury, Greater Hartford, Windham): Periods of morning rain, then improving with some sun late. Highs: 75-81.

Litchfield Hills (including Torrington, Litchfield, Winchester): Morning showers tapering to clouds and some late sunshine; locally heavier rain possible early. Highs: 73-79.
