Sept. 13 (UPI) -- A passenger train traveling to Warsaw, Poland, from Kyiv on Sunday morning was struck by a Russian drone within 2 miles of the Polish border, Ukrainian authorities said.
State-run rail operator Ukrainian Railways said a locomotive was hit in the attack, adding that the train's crew were warned in advance by Ukrainian officials.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on X that Russian President Vladimir Putin was "knocking directly on the doors of the EU and NATO. Russian barbarians are at your gate, dear partners."
At least six people were killed and more than 40 were injured overnight in attacks across Ukraine by hundreds of Russian drones and missiles. Ukraine's military said 405 drones and four missiles were intercepted.
The attacks prompted air raids in Poland, which borders Ukraine's west.
According to Ukrainian Railways, several European security advisers, former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, and former CIA Director David Petreus went through the border crossing just before the train attack.
"It is quite likely that the target of this Russian drone could also have been the diplomatic train, which departed from the station earlier than planned as part of the real-time review of train schedules due to the constant threat of Russian strikes," the company said.
