ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - It's been about a month since Abilene first responders found a body in the rubble of a house fire on Grape Street.
Now a Baird woman is identifying that man and wants answers on why it took so long to find him.
"We need to find out what really happened," the woman, who asked to remain anonymous, said.
51-year-old Michael Dittmar died in a house fire on Grape Street on August 8, according to the woman. She said she is Dittmar's ex-wife.
The woman found out through BigCountryHomepage's reporting, recognizing neighboring houses in a video shared on air and online.
"I told my now fiancé, 'That's my daughter's daddy's house.' He goes, 'No.' Then we went to Abilene that day. I say, 'Let's go by there.' And once we went back there, it was confirmed," she recalled.
But his body wasn't discovered until 10 days later, on August 18.
"Make it make sense," she said.
She described Dittmar as outgoing and kindhearted.
"Almost two months, no answers. No answers from the fire department, the police department. We need justice. You don't let somebody lie for 10 days," she said.
She claims an Atmos worker found the body.
Dittmar also leaves behind a daughter.
"He won't get to see his daughter get married. He won't get to see his daughter go to prom, and it's killing me. How do you tell a 12-year-old now that her daddy's gone?"
As questions remain about the cause of the fire, the Baird woman hopes to get answers soon.
BigCountryHomepage reached out to the Abilene Fire Department for an update on the house fire. We have not heard back at this time.
