Some Texans are starting to see cooler temperatures, and residents in one part of the state might need to grab a sweatshirt with an incoming cold front set to drop nighttime temperatures to lows around 50 degrees.

Following a stormy week in the Midland-Odessa region, forecasters anticipate weather will gradually cool, with highs settling 85 and 95 degrees, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Midland-Odessa office. Alongside an increased chance of rain and thunderstorms on Saturday and Sunday, a cold front is expected to push in from the north.

Noticeably cooler nights are forecast, with the potential to fall roughly 20 degrees from daytime highs.

"Lows by early next week are also expected to fall into the 50s and 60s [Fahrenheit] as cooler daytime temperatures below 90F allow nighttime temperatures to cool below 70F," Midland-Odessa forecasters wrote in their outlook.

While hazardous weather isn't likely, meteorologists say they will continue to monitor flash flooding and severe storm risks.

"At this time, there is no indication of widespread severe weather accompanying the increased rain chances," forecasters wrote. "This will become even more important to watch as summer weather fades and risk of more widespread severe weather becomes increasingly possible following transition into the more active autumn secondary severe weather season."

A possible pattern shift could also be headed for the Texas Panhandle this weekend after a week of severe storm potential.

"The upper-level trough continues its eastward propagation placing the Panhandles in the exit region," forecasters with the NWS Amarillo office wrote in their outlook. "This could be a pattern shift to keep an eye on that could bring widespread rain chances to the Panhandles over the weekend and a drop in temperatures as we head into next week."

However, meteorologists say it is still too early to determine exactly what will happen.

"Uncertainty in the positioning of the trough as it swings through is still high, and will have to be monitored in future forecasts," forecasters wrote.
