An investigation has been launched after a woman was found injured by the roadside in the western German city of Witten, with the suspicion that she had been deliberately run over, police said.
The 55-year-old was discovered by chance on Sunday morning by an ambulance crew passing by, who found her lying in a parking bay in what police described as an "unusual position." She was given initial treatment and taken to hospital.
"According to the current state of the investigation, she has sustained minor injuries," police in the nearby city of Bochum said in a statement.
"At this stage, the Criminal Investigation Department assumes that the woman was deliberately run over," based in part by her own account, a police spokesman said.
The Bochum police department has established a homicide investigation team "to clarify the circumstances of the incident," the statement said. The police are appealing for witnesses.
