A Fall River man has been arrested and will be charged with two counts of attempted murder after a stabbing at a Somerset hotel.
Somerset police said Kyle Barboza, 42, of Fall River has been arrested after what police described as a sudden attack at the Riverview Inn & Suites at 1878 Wilbur Ave. on Saturday, Aug. 1, that left a man and a woman stabbed multiple times.
According to police, the motel's front desk clerk reported a female guest in the lobby was bleeding from a stab wound in the neck. Upon arrival, police found the woman in her room holding a cloth to her neck and two men struggling on the floor, one trying to hold the other down. A bloody knife was on the floor next to them.
The woman told the police officer that the man being held down — whom Somerset police later identified as Barboza — was in the room with them, police said. They said she told them Barboza had suddenly attacked her, attempting to slash her throat.
Somerset police detectives alleged that Barboza contacted the victims earlier on Saturday to ask if he could stay with them. They agreed, and brought him to the hotel room. The three decided to go shopping, and when the man went into the bathroom, Barboza allegedly approached from behind and attempted to cut her throat and hit her in the head.
When the woman screamed for help, Somerset police said, the man tried to stop the attack; he was stabbed or cut multiple times in the struggle, but disarmed the attacker and held him down until police arrived.
Somerset police said Barboza is hospitalized, under arrest and held on $500,000 cash bail, and being monitored by police.
When discharged from medical care, he will be arraigned in Fall River District Court. A date has not yet been set.
At that arraignment, Barboza is expected to be charged with two counts of assaults and battery with a dangerous weapon, causing serious bodily injury, and two counts of attempted murder.
