Connecticut's brief weekend break from the rain is over. Monday brings another round of showers and thunderstorms to ground that is still holding plenty of water from last week's soaking.
Periods of rain may already be underway in some communities during the morning, with additional showers and embedded thunderstorms continuing through the afternoon. It may not pour continuously in every town, but Monday looks like the wettest and most disruptive day of the next several. Temperatures will generally reach the upper 70s to lower 80s, but clouds, high humidity and occasional rain will keep the day feeling damp.
Heavy downpours will be the primary concern. The atmosphere will contain an unusually deep supply of moisture, allowing any thunderstorm to produce a lot of rain in a short period. Localized flooding will be possible in urban areas, poor-drainage spots and communities that received some of the highest totals last week.
A few thunderstorms may also produce gusty winds as a cold front crosses the region Monday afternoon. The severe-weather potential will depend on whether the atmosphere can become unstable between rounds of rain, but it is another reason to keep weather alerts nearby. Visibility could drop sharply during heavier downpours, so both commutes may feature slower travel.
Parts of the state could receive an inch or more of rainfall during the day, with locally higher totals possible in slow-moving downpours. Small streams and creeks could respond quickly where the heaviest bands develop, although the exact placement of those bands remains uncertain.
Showers should become less widespread Monday night, but the storm system may be slow enough to leave some clouds and passing rain around Tuesday, particularly across eastern Connecticut. A drier and gradually warmer trend is expected to develop Wednesday and Thursday, with more breaks of sunshine and temperatures climbing farther into the 80s.
Shoreline (including Stamford, Bridgeport, New Haven, New London): Cloudy, breezy and very humid with showers and thunderstorms; heavy downpours and ponding possible. Highs: 78-83.
Inland (including Danbury, Waterbury, Greater Hartford, Windham): Periods of rain and thunderstorms with locally torrential downpours and isolated flooding possible. Highs: 77-83.
Litchfield Hills (including Torrington, Litchfield, Winchester): Rain and embedded thunderstorms, heavy at times, with minor flooding possible near small streams and poor-drainage areas. Highs: 76-82.
