Pope Leo XIV will visit Peru - his former home - for the first time later this year, with the trip also taking in Argentina and Uruguay from November 6 to 17, the Vatican said on Wednesday.
The pontiff spent many years in Peru as a missionary and bishop before his election to the papacy last year.
The first US citizen to lead the world's estimated 1.4 billion Catholics also holds Peruvian citizenship, acquired during his time as bishop of the city of Chiclayo from 2015 to 2023.
As head of state of the Vatican, he received a third passport following his election last year.
Leo is expected to arrive in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, on November 6.
Two days later, he will travel on to neighbouring Argentina, the Vatican said.
From November 11, he is expected to spend nearly a week in Peru, a country the Chicago-born pontiff likes to call his "second home."
The itinerary also includes a visit to Chiclayo, a city of 290,000 in the north-west of the country, where locals still call him "Monseñor Roberto."
Before his time as bishop, the pontiff had already worked as a missionary in Peru from the mid-1980s to the late 1990s, under his civilian name Robert Prevost.
He then served for several years as the worldwide head of the Augustinian Order.
Leo speaks fluent Spanish, honed over nearly two decades in Peru.
Before the South American trip, the 70-year-old is scheduled to visit France at the end of September.
