Even though it's not a presidential election year, much of the attention will still be on federal races as the House of Representatives and Senate feature heavily on ballots.
In New Jersey, in addition to town, county and school board races throughout the state, all 12 members of the House and one senator will be on the ballot.
But when is the election and what do people need to know to get ready?
Here's a list of a few of the important dates for anyone keeping track at home.
Vote by mail ballots are the first step in this election and they'll be sent out on Sept. 19.
Anyone that hasn't applied for a mail-in ballot but wanted to has until Oct. 27 to do so by mail and Nov. 2 at 3 p.m. to do so in person.
Appropriately postmarked mail-in ballots are eligible as long as they are received by Nov. 9.
The deadline to register to vote in order to participate in the general election this fall is Oct. 13.
Sample ballots will go out on Oct. 21 and then early in-person voting starts on Oct. 24 and runs through Nov. 1.
That takes place at designated early voting locations throughout each county. They'll be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
Election Day is Nov. 3. That means that's the deadline to submit mail-in ballots via authorized drop box or for them to be postmarked by the United States Postal Service.
Polls will also be open for in person voting from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
