In the Massachusetts Senate's Norfolk/Suffolk District, a Democratic primary challenger hopes to knock off one of the party's senior members on Beacon Hill.
Sen. Michael Rush entered the state Senate in 2011 after serving in the state House of Representatives since 2002. Now seeking his 9th term in the Senate, he will have to contend with Persis Yu, an attorney who has represented student loan borrowers and consumers in court.
With no Republicans on the ballot, the winner of the Democratic primary will effectively secure the seat.
The district includes Dedham, Norwood, Walpole, Westwood and a portion of Boston covering West Roxbury, Hyde Park, Roslindale and Jamaica Plain.
Rush, the Senate's Democratic whip, chairs the Senate Committee on Personnel and Administration and also sits on the Committee on Ways and Means, the Senate's influential budgeting committee.
Yu has worked as an attorney for the National Consumer Law Center and Protect Borrowers (formerly known as the Student Borrower Protection Center).
She touts her involvement in legal challenges to Bank of America, the cargo airline Ameriflight and the Trump administration's Department of Education.
