Volusia County's coastline will undergo a federal review to determine coastal storm and erosion risks.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District will conduct a Federal Interest Determination, which is the first step in determining whether the agency will move forward with a more comprehensive study of the county's coastal needs and potential solutions.
The review will examine existing information about storm and erosion risks, potential impacts to homes, businesses, public access and infrastructure, and whether the challenges facing the county fall within the Army Corps' federal authority.
County officials said the determination and approval process is expected to take no more than 45 days once it begins.
If the federal review advances, the next step would be a comprehensive feasibility study examining coastal storm risks and potential improvements.
According to the county, that process could ultimately lead to a federally authorized and funded coastal storm risk management project.
Volusia County said it is one of only two counties along Florida's Atlantic coast without a federally authorized project.
