GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) -- Talk of Flock cameras has been everywhere recently. What are they, and maybe more importantly, where are they?
According to Flock's website, the company builds and sells technology that aims to assist law enforcement, businesses, schools and communities, "Make better informed decisions." The company further lists reasons to use their products, including helping agencies locate missing people, recover stolen cars and solve crimes more quickly. The company's technology relies on license plate readers that track details of whatever passes by the camera, especially cars. As of right now, the company states that they do not contract with ICE or Palantir.
Flock does not provide a detailed map of where their products may be. So, community members decided to change that.
DeFlock.org is a community-based organization that tracks exactly where Flock cameras are in neighborhoods across the country. This is crowdsourced information, meaning that individuals themselves upload details of where they saw a Flock camera in their community.
The setup for DeFlock is simple. You input your city or specific address in their map and see the location of Flock cameras in your area. This is not a definitive list, nor is it verified by the company itself.
According to DeFlock, there are 1,682 cameras in Pitt County that have been reported, with 87% of those being Flock cameras. The website further states that there are 8 in New Bern, 12 in Kinston and 24 in Jacksonville. For perspective, there are 129,029 license plate reading camera sightings documented on DeFlock's website for the whole United States.
