The Middlesex District Attorney's Office on Thursday, Aug. 13, identified the two people who died Monday after a rollover crash on Interstate-290 in Marlborough as a mother and son.
Arlene Leakeas, 79, of Dracut, and her son Mark Leakeas, 59, of Tyngsborough, were each declared dead at the scene of the 2:45 p.m. crash.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police and the Middlesex District Attorney's Office.
On Monday, the Marlborough Fire Department and state police responded to I-290 eastbound, near the Interstate-495 interchange, for a report of a serious crash. They found that two people — the Leakeases — had been ejected from the vehicle in which they were riding and died at the scene.
Two dogs inside their vehicle were also ejected. One was uninjured but the second was transported to Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine-Tufts University in Grafton with serious injuries. The dog's current condition is unknown.

A woman in a second vehicle, which ended up down an embankment, was transported to UMass-Memorial Medical Center in Worcester to be treated for unspecified injuries.
Marlborough Fire Chief Jeffrey Gogan said Tuesday that that stretch of highway is known to have incurred several crashes due to the backup of people waiting to get onto I-495 from I-290. But he called Monday's crash "by far the worst we've had in quite some time."
