NORMAL, Ill. (WMBD) -- A local disaster emergency is declared by the town of Normal following Thursday's storms that rolled through Central Illinois.
"Normal residents and businesses sustained significant damage from downed trees, widespread power outages and structural damage to numerous properties," Mayor Chris Koos said. "We appreciate crews working to restore power in our community. Town crews have worked tirelessly to clear roadways. We thank everyone for their patience throughout the cleanup."

The emergency declaration allows the town to activate the appropriate responses and authorizes the "furnishing of aid and assistance," as needed, town spokeswoman Cathy Oloffson said.
She said that crews continue to work to clear roads of trees and branches and advises people who live there to "use extreme caution," and assume any downed power line is live.
