An off-duty Philadelphia police officer has died following a shooting outside an after hours lounge in Southwest Philadelphia.
Police say officers responded to reports of a shooting on the 7300 block of Elmwood Avenue just before 4 a.m. Sunday.
Upon arrival, police found two men suffering from gunshot wounds.
One of those men was identified as a 29-year-old off-duty police officer.
The other was identified as a 35-year-old man.
Both men were taken to Penn Presbyterian Hospital, where the off-duty officer later died.
There is no word on the extent of the injuries to the other victim.
"We met with the trauma surgeons, they did a valiant effort. My officer suffered a catastrophic injury, he did not make it," said Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel during a news conference Sunday morning.
Philadelphia police officers and family were gathered as the body of the off-duty officer was carried out of Penn Presbyterian Hospital and placed inside an ambulance.
Police say they found a handgun at the scene, and several spent shell casings.
They continue to search for a suspect and look for any information on this case.
"We will be investigating one, what this site was, why the officer was there. We will be doing a complete investigation, everything leading up to this incident and what transpired in relation to this location," said Bethel. "We continue to ask the public for any support they have, anything they saw, any video they may have captured, call our homicide unit call tips or call 911."
Anyone with information is asked to call 215-686-TIPS.
