Delaware State Police have identified the 41-year-old man who was killed after being hit by a car on Sussex Highway (Route 13) near Laurel on Aug. 15.

Richard Housel was walking west in the right lane of southbound Sussex Highway about 9:20 p.m. when police said he was hit by a Toyota Camry traveling in the same direction. The crash occurred as the Toyota approached Oasis Drive.

Housel, of the Laurel area, was taken to a hospital where he died.

The Toyota driver, a 21-year-old Laurel man, was not injured.

Delaware traffic fatalities continue on an upward trend, with the state transportation department reporting 72 fatalities as of Aug. 17 — that's an 18% increase over last year at the same time when 61 traffic fatalities had been reported.
