At least eight people have died in a fire at a hotel in the temple town of Tarapith in eastern India.
Police responded to the blaze early on Monday and rescued dozens of people, West Bengal state leader Suvendu Adhikari wrote on X. Numerous people were also injured, according to officials.
All eight victims were members of a family from the north-eastern state of Meghalaya, broadcaster NDTV reported. Two children were among the dead.
A total of 43 guests were rescued from the multi-storey hotel, NDTV reported, citing Vidit Raj Bhundesh, police chief of Birbhum district.
The fire broke out on the ground floor, with fire officials initially suspecting a short circuit. The exact cause remains under investigation.
Police have reportedly detained the hotel owner as investigators examine whether safety regulations were followed. Bhundesh said access to the hotel's roof had been blocked.
The hotel is located near a temple, and most guests had travelled to Tarapith to pray during Shravan, a sacred month in the Hindu calendar.
