Want to grow your own shiitake mushrooms at home? A hands-on workshop at Ohio State University Mansfield will give participants a chance to learn the process and leave with an inoculated log ready for cultivation.

The event is being offered by the Ohio Woodland Stewards Program and Ohio State University Extension, according to a community announcement. Participants will learn how to select hardwood logs, inoculate them with mushroom spawn and care for them as gourmet mushrooms develop outdoors.

The three-hour Lunch & Learn program is scheduled from 12-3 p.m. Aug. 25 in Room 206 of Ovalwood Hall on the Mansfield campus. The cost is $15 per person, which includes lunch and materials, and each attendee will take home a shiitake mushroom log prepared during the workshop.

Organizers say the program is geared toward gardeners, nature enthusiasts and anyone interested in producing food at home using sustainable methods. No previous experience is required.

Registration is open through Aug. 20. More details and registration information are available at woodlandstewards.osu.edu.

The Ohio Woodland Stewards Program is also planning a Lunch & Learn session titled "Non-native Worms" on Oct. 21.

The program will examine the effects of invasive earthworms on Ohio forests and ecosystems and discuss ways landowners can help protect native woodlands, according to the announcement.
