With September just around the corner, it's already almost time for the kids to go back to school.

Typically, public schools on Cape Cod start right around Labor Day, which falls this year on Monday, Sept. 7. However, the Cape's many public school districts vary in whether they start right before or right after the September holiday.  

Wondering if you or your child starts school in late August or early September? Here is a list of start dates for the 2026-27 academic year at all public school districts on Cape Cod, listed in alphabetical order.

For Barnstable Public Schools, grades 1-12 will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 2. Pre-K and kindergarten will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 8 after screening and orientation from Sept. 2-3.

Grades 1-12 at Bourne Public Schools will start on Wednesday, Sept. 2, kindergarten will start on Thursday, Sept. 3 and pre-K will start on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

The Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District will start school on Wednesday, Sept. 9 for kindergarten through 12th grade and Thursday, Sept. 10 for preschool.

Students in grades 1-12 at Falmouth Public Schools begin on Monday, Aug. 31. Kindergarten begins on Wednesday, Sept. 2 after orientation on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1.

Tuesday, Sept 8. marks the first day for Martha's Vineyard Public Schools.

Mashpee Public Schools start on Wednesday, Aug. 26 for grades 1-12 and Thursday, Aug. 27 for pre-K and kindergarten.

In the Monomoy Regional School District, covering schools in Chatham and Harwich, grades 1-12 start on Tuesday, Sept. 1, kindergarten starts on Thursday, Sept. 3 and preschool starts on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Nantucket Public Schools start on Tuesday, Sept. 8 for grades 1-12, Thursday, Sept. 10 for kindergarten and Monday, Sept. 14 for pre-K.

Students in grades 1-12 at Nauset Public Schools will have their first day on Tuesday, Sept. 8. Kindergarten will have orientation on Sept. 8 and the first day on Wednesday, Sept. 9, and pre-K's first day is on Monday, Sept. 14.

All Provincetown International Baccalaureate Schools start on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

At Sandwich Public Schools, grades 1-12 begin on Wednesday, Sept. 2. Kindergarten will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 8 after Family Day on Sept. 3, and pre-K will begin on Monday, Sept. 14.
