Lithuania is to build a new military camp at the Rudninkai training area near the border with Belarus to accommodate German soldiers and other NATO troops, the Defence Ministry in Vilnius said on Thursday.
The camp will have capacity for more than 1,000 soldiers taking part in exercises in the NATO member state.
Residential and support buildings, along with technical infrastructure and transport links, are to be built across a seven-hectare site at a cost of around €40 million ($46 million).
Construction is expected to be completed in the first half of 2028.
Germany's armed forces are currently establishing the 45th Armoured Brigade in EU member Lithuania. It is Germany's first permanent foreign military deployment since World War II.
The deployment was pledged by the German government in response to the growing threat from Russia, and the brigade was formally activated in April 2025.
It is expected to be fully operational as a combat unit by next year, with a total strength of 4,800 soldiers and 200 civilian personnel. Around 2,000 members of the brigade are currently stationed in Lithuania.
Rudninkai will serve as the brigade's main base.
The barracks are being built in a forested area that was designated as a Lithuanian military training ground under a special law in May 2022, shortly after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Construction of the 190-hectare military complex is the largest military infrastructure project in Lithuania's history.
