A fight broke out between groups of teenagers on a Pierce Transit bus Tuesday night at the South Hill Mall Transit Center in Puyallup, leaving multiple people pepper-sprayed and resulting in two arrests.

A bus driver was among those caught in the middle of the altercation and hit with pepper spray during the incident.

The brawl spilled out from the bus onto the transit center grounds, involving punching, kicking, and participants using skateboards as weapons. Police reported that no serious injuries occurred during the altercation.

"Seemed to be two separate groups who did not have, prior to this, any known beef. They ran into each other at the transit center, and then that's how it went," said Puyallup Police Captain Jeremy Hedrick.

Two separate groups of teens, including a 12-year-old, boarded the Pierce Transit bus before getting into an argument.

During the conflict, a transit worker was spit on and pepper spray was deployed inside the bus, hitting multiple people, including the bus driver.

The altercation then spilled outside the bus, where participants continued punching and kicking, and some used skateboards as weapons.

Police arrested 18-year-old Xzayviar Hughes of Tacoma on assault charges.

Authorities said Hughes was the individual who sprayed others with pepper spray during the altercation.

Following his arrest, police body cam footage shows Hughes questioning the charges. "I tried to help the situation… why am I getting arrested?" Hughes asked.

Officers also arrested a second 18-year-old man for interfering with the investigation. Police said the second man was related to one of the teens involved in the fight.

Additionally, officers detained two teenagers under age 18 at the scene, who were later released into the custody of their parents.

"This is not something we regularly see at that transit center. We have a strong police presence up there, as you can see; officers responded very quickly and got on scene quickly, and so that's not a normal call for us to have up there," said Hedrick.

The bus drivers' union did not comment on the violence itself.

However, the union confirmed that the bus driver who was pepper-sprayed is doing fine.
