MENOMONIE, Wis., (WLAX, WEUX) - Governor Tony Evers paid a visit to Menomonie to highlight a $1 million water system upgrade funded by a community development block grant.

The visit coincides with a proposal from President Donald Trump to eliminate that same grant program in his upcoming budget.

Governor Evers warns that the cuts would be detrimental to rural infrastructure and housing.

He's urging Wisconsin congressional members to block the president's proposal.

"People want clean water, and this is one of the ways that the federal government can participate in making that happen. So, we're concerned big time, but hopefully in the near future, the folks in Washington, D.C. will get their act together and keep this project going."

Just last month, Menomonie experienced a water crisis. The city had to issue a boil water advisory following significant loss of pressure in the municipal water system due to high demand.

That advisory was lifted, but a lawn watering ban has been extended until October 31.
