WASHINGTON COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) -- Folks in western Maryland will be out celebrating their rural, farm heritage this weekend.

It's the annual Spud Fest -- or potato festival -- honoring the traditions of the agricultural community in the Washington County region.

There will be potato chip-making demonstrations, tractor shows, draft horses, an 1800s rural village, an antique exhibition, living histories, master gardener workshops, face painting for kids, and a candy kitchen.

"The potato harvest and all the other activities are geared toward getting their hands dirty and having fun," said Annette Cormany with the University of Maryland master gardener program.

"The kids go out and get a gallon bucket, and when they get the bucket full, they get to take the potatoes home,"explained Phil Muritz with the Washington County Rural Heritage Museum.

The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Washington County Agriculture Education Center on Sharpsburg Pike just south of Hagerstown.

The event is free, though donations are welcome at the parking area of the festival grounds.
