A 21-year-old Paxton man is facing multiple charges following a crash Saturday night, Aug. 22, that killed a man and a minor in North Reading.

Matthew Sweeney has been charged with felony motor vehicle homicide, operating under the influence and operating to endanger, according a press release from the office of Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and North Reading Police Chief Mark Zimmerman.

According to the press release, Sweeney crashed his Acura MDX into a Honda HR-V that was stopped at a red light on Route 28 around 10:45 p.m. The Honda became engulfed in flames. First responders and a Good Samaritan attempted to get the occupants out of the car but two victims, an adult male and a minor, died on scene.

The victims have not yet been identified publicly.

The preliminary investigation indicates that Sweeney was driving at a high speed, according to the press release.

Sweeney is scheduled to be arraigned in Woburn District Court on Monday, Aug. 24.
