A Florida man is facing murder charges in connection with the death of an Alabama State University student in Montgomery.
On Aug. 23 at 10:54 a.m., police went to the 1600 block of Interstate Park Drive on a report of a dead person, said Lt. Tina McGriff, spokeswoman for the Montgomery Police Department. They found Ava Walters, 20, of Montgomery, unresponsive and she was pronounced dead, McGriff said.
Jalil Bivens, 22, of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, has been charged with murder, she said. He was taken to the Montgomery County Detention Facility.
Bivens could not be reached for comment and court records do not show if he has an attorney.
In a statement from the university, ASU President Quinton T. Ross Jr. identified Ava Walters as second-year Health Information Management major from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
"On behalf of Alabama State University Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, alumni, and students, I extend my deepest condolences to Ms. Walter's family, friends, classmates, and all who knew and loved her," Ross said. "There are no words that can truly ease the pain of losing a loved one, but please know that the entire Hornet Nation stands with you during this difficult time."
The ASU release stated that the site where the she was found is an off-campus university facility.
