A 19-year-old man remained in critical condition Aug. 25, a day after authorities said he shot at police and then shot himself in the head in a motel room on Ridgewood Avenue in Daytona Beach.
Police received a report about 1:45 p.m. Aug. 24 that Ian Sylas Garner robbed someone of $500 and a cellphone at the Lumina Motel at 640 S. Ridgewood Ave.
When they knocked on his motel room door, Garner fired at officers, who returned fire, police said.
Two women in the motel room at the time managed to escape.
Garner subsequently shot himself in the head and was taken to a hospital, police said.
A police officer sustained a cut from what is believed to be shrapnel, but was OK, Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari Young said during an Aug. 24 press conference.
Young said Garner has a criminal history of about 11 arrests, including robbery without a firearm, petit theft, battery, armed trespassing and armed burglary.
The gunfire and standoff closed down a stretch of Ridgewood Avenue as Daytona Beach Police officers and Volusia Sheriff's deputies responded to the scene. Onlookers a couple of blocks away recorded the activity with cellphones.
Daytona Beach Police and the sheriff's office each brought an armored vehicle to the scene.
Police sent a drone up while the sheriff's office helicopter circled at a higher altitude over the scene.
A Daytona Beach Police officer armed with a rifle was seen running north on Ridgewood Avenue. A few minutes later, he ran south back toward the Lumina Motel, still carrying the rifle but also holding an aluminum ladder.
Officers using a ballistic shield to protect themselves slowly walked across the front of the motel at one point.
