A German Shepherd named Shadow refused to stay quiet as flames raced toward his owner's Spokane home, and his desperate warning gave Donna Carberry the seconds she needed to survive.

Donna Carberry had no idea how close the danger had come. As a fast-moving wildfire tore through the Spokane, Washington, area, she was still inside her home as the fire began consuming parts of her property. Shadow, however, sensed the threat long before she did, and he was not about to let her miss it.

For anyone who knows the German Shepherd breed, their loyalty is unwavering. And in this instance, the dog became increasingly desperate to get his owner's attention by throwing his body against the back door again and again. While his frantic behavior seemed strange at first, it took mere moments for Donna to realize what Shadow was doing: trying to save her life.

And when she opened the door, the terrifying impact of the wildfire was made clear as she watched her barn consumed in flames and the fire now approaching her home.

With fire surrounding the property, turning familiar surroundings into a landscape of smoke and flame, there seemed no time to react. Her truck and horse trailer burned in the driveway. But just as conditions grew to a fever pitch, Good Samaritans stepped in to help Donna escape with Shadow and her cat.

But getting away from the house was only the start of Donna's ordeal. In the chaos of the evacuation, she found herself stranded along the side of the road for more than 24 hours while watching others flee the area. Through it all, the dog stayed close to the person he had fought so hard to protect.

"My barn had already burned down and the fire had come up the back steps and onto the deck and was already going up the side of my house. So, he literally saved my life," Donna told Best Friends Animal Society.

Relief eventually arrived when a young woman helping evacuate horses stopped to check on Donna. After learning how long she had been stranded, the woman made room in her vehicle and drove Donna and her animals to safety.

The wildfire wiped out much of the life that Donna and her fur crew knew as two of her beloved horses died in the flames. A third horse survived and was taken to a neighbor's farm, where Donna's cat was also given a safe place to stay. Shadow, meanwhile, remained by her side, providing a steady source of comfort. Yep, that's a Shepherd for you..

Now, Donna was also dealing with physical injuries because after sufferng a fall, she temporarily needed a wheelchair. Which can make caring for a large dog, challenging. And that's when Best Friends Animal Society stepped up to the plate. They provided care for Shadow while Donna focused on healing herself and the difficult work of rebuilding her life.

Talk about paying it forward! Shadow's persistence gave Donna the warning she needed at the moment it mattered most, and when she later needed help herself, strangers and rescuers returned that devotion. She lost treasured animals and much of what surrounded her home, but she did not lose the dog who refused to give up on her. Methinks Shadow has earned steak for his persistence. Agree?
