The number of unemployed people in Germany rose by 54,000 in August compared with the previous month to 3.061 million, 36,000 more than in August 2025, the Federal Employment Agency said on Friday.
The unemployment rate rose by 0.1 percentage point compared with the previous month to 6.5%.
"In August, too, the labour market shows little dynamism beyond the usual seasonal pattern," said Andrea Nahles, chair of the Federal Employment Agency's executive board. "This continues the subdued trend of recent months."
The agency based the latest statistics on data available up to August 13.
Demand for workers remains subdued, the agency said.
In August, 656,000 vacancies were registered with the authority, although that was 3,000 more than in July and 25,000 more than a year earlier.
The number of people in jobs subject to social insurance contributions rose by a seasonally adjusted 1,000 from May to June according to a projection, but was down 73,000 compared with the same period last year.
Cyclical short-time working - a subsidized government furlough scheme, whereby workers are sent home by a company in financial distress, but do not lose their jobs - also remains at a somewhat elevated level.
According to a projection, 1.133 million people received unemployment benefit in August, 109,000 more than a year earlier. Experts attributed the increase to the difficult economic situation and structural change.
The number of people of working age entitled to the unemployment welfare payment fell by 116,000 year-on-year to 3.754 million. The Federal Employment Agency said this also reflected the successful integration of refugees into the labour market. Not all welfare recipients are without work, as some use the payment to top up their wages to reach the subsistence level.
