Japan just proved it can buy a new weapon system in under three months, a process that normally takes one to two years. The country's defense-procurement agency signed a mass-production deal for a 3D-printed interceptor drone, fast-tracking the acquisition to counter a wave of cheap attack drones and loitering munitions.
Japan's Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Agency selected Terra Drone's Terra B1, a rocket-launched interceptor, after competitive trials that concluded last month. The agency called the roughly three-month timeline unprecedented, marking the first time it has used this rapid-acquisition approach specifically for drones.
Terra B1 serves as the Japanese counterpart to Terra A1, a related system Terra Drone already fielded on Ukraine's battlefields earlier this year. The Tokyo-based company has drawn directly on that combat experience. It has also acquired stakes in two Ukrainian interceptor-drone companies.
ATLA launched its tender in late May, seeking a drone capable of intercepting one-way attack drones like the Shahed alongside anti-radar loitering munitions such as the IAI Harpy. Terra Drone said the B1 was the only system to pass the resulting trials. Delivery is planned for around September, with Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force expected to receive the system first.
Terra Drone CEO Toru Tokushige said 3D printing lets the company simplify and shorten the design and prototyping stage significantly. That speed helps Terra B1 move into mass production as quickly as possible while still meeting the contract's requirements.
Beyond cutting costs and accelerating production, the printing-based approach gives Terra Drone room to modify the interceptors as threats evolve, without delaying the broader deployment schedule. The company plans to spread production across multiple sites and eventually expand into local printing farms, a deliberate hedge against any single facility being knocked offline.
Tokushige said one production site could be attacked by a weapon like a Shahed-type drone at any time. That distributed setup, he said, could significantly reduce the risk of the entire supply chain being disrupted as a result. That same printing-farm model has already become a frontline necessity in Ukraine. Such setups churn out drone parts and support equipment for brigades fighting an ongoing war.
The decision reflects Tokyo's growing effort to build up domestic 3D printing capacity for defense needs. The ministry's interest builds on a longer history of experimenting with printers in the field, dating back to 2012 when the US Army and Navy first deployed them. Tokushige framed the shift in ambitious terms. He argued that 3D printing isn't simply about reducing manufacturing costs. It could transform Japan's defense manufacturing into a faster, more flexible, and more resilient production model overall.
Analysts remain cautious about how far that shift can extend, however. Experts have questioned whether Japan can replicate this same rapid procurement process across other weapons systems going forward. They also wonder whether the country's broader export ambitions and rising global demand might outpace what its manufacturing base can actually deliver. ATLA has not disclosed the number of units on order or the contract's value. The government aims to field a large unmanned fleet using this approach by 2027.
