Petrol and diesel prices in Poland are set to rise significantly from Tuesday as a government fuel discount introduced for the summer holiday period comes to an end.
The scheme expires with the end of Poland's school holidays on Monday.
For Monday, the maximum price for a litre of regular petrol was set at the equivalent of around €1.54 ($1.78), while premium petrol was capped at around €1.73 and diesel at around €1.70, according to the Energy Ministry.
Industry experts estimate that petrol and diesel prices could rise by the equivalent of 14 to 20 cents per litre once the discount expires.
A reduced VAT rate of 8% was put into effect in Poland on August 17. The Energy Ministry has also set a daily maximum retail fuel price based on average wholesale prices and the operating costs of the country's largest suppliers.
The government introduced the measures to provide motorists with financial relief as they returned from their summer holidays.
