Celebrating the contributions of the nation's workers, Labor Day was signed into law as a federal holiday in 1894 by North Jersey-born President Grover Cleveland. While the Monday holiday offers a three-day weekend to acknowledge the coming end of summer with barbecues and fun before the schools get into full swing and the weather begins to turn autumnal, it is worth taking a moment to reflect upon and honor the history of labor in the U.S. on this day.

Some towns are celebrating in their own ways, with fireworks, a parade, a carnival and music:

Mendham Borough's annual Labor Day event will include a carnival, Sept. 4 through Sept. 7, as well as a parade beginning at 10 a.m. Sept. 7. The theme for the parade is "250 Years of Freedom, 120 Years of Community," commemorating America's 250th and the borough's 120th anniversaries.
