The victim in a homicide last week has been identified.

According to the Pierce County Medical Examiner's public portal, the man was 24-year-old Harden Keys IV. The cause of death was listed as a gunshot wound to the chest.

Officers with the Tacoma Police Department responded to a local hospital at about 12:23 a.m. on Aug. 27, The News Tribune previously reported. Keys had been transported there in a personal vehicle.

The ME portal says Keys's death occurred in a public space in Tacoma but does not give further information. Shelbie Boyd, spokesperson for the Tacoma Police Department, told The News Tribune on Tuesday there were no updates in the case.

Keys was involved in a series of legal disputes — including one month before his death.

According to court documents, Keys was involved in a shooting at a Tacoma gas station on July 21.

At 3:25 p.m. that day, Keys was sitting in his car with a woman in the passenger seat when another car pulled into the parking spot two spaces west, documents say. The driver, a man, got out and greeted Keys and the woman.

Keys later left the car to talk to someone outside the barber shop when the other man got into the driver's seat of Keys' car, according to court records. Keys' car started rocking back and forth "as if something was happening inside the car," and Keys allegedly ran back over to the driver's side, looked inside and shot the man.

He fired at the man one more time, documents say, until the man got out of the car. The two men then allegedly fired several more shots at each other until the other man fled in his car.

The other man later arrived at a local hospital with gunshot wounds, according to documents. The woman who had been in Keys' car later told police the man was her ex-boyfriend and had been "beating on her" when Keys shot him.

Prosecutors charged Keys on Aug. 3 with first-degree assault and unlawful firearm possession, since he had prior felony convictions that forbade him from owning a firearm.

Keys was also charged in connection with a drive-by shooting on Dec. 24, 2022, The News Tribune previously reported. Keys was a passenger in the SUV and pleaded guilty to third-degree assault and unlawfully possessing a firearm.

He was sentenced to six months in jail and was released.
