The City of Mansfield will plant a commemorative white oak in Liberty Park on Sept. 4 as part of the Heritage Trees: Planting History program tied to America 250-Ohio, the statewide effort marking the nation's 250th anniversary.
The tree will be planted at Liberty Park, 493 Grace St., a site selected because of its historical significance, central location and role as a gathering place for residents, according to a community announcement. America 250-Ohio launched the Heritage Trees program in Lima on Arbor Day 2025 and plans to place commemorative trees in all 88 Ohio counties through 2026.
The initiative is inspired by Boston's historic Liberty Tree, a symbol from the Revolutionary War era. Under the program, each Ohio county will receive a native white oak tree to serve as a lasting tribute to the nation's semiquincentennial celebration.
"Planting a heritage tree is an investment in the future of our community. The trees we plant today will provide beauty, shade, and environmental benefits for generations to come," Parks Superintendent Mike Woogerd said. "We're proud to continue Richland County's commitment to preserving our natural heritage and enhancing Liberty Park as a place for families, residents, and visitors to enjoy."
America 250-Ohio selected white oaks because they are native to Ohio, grow in a variety of soil types and are resistant to many common tree diseases.
Program organizers said the specific white oak variety chosen for each location depends on local climate conditions. Trees are purchased from Ohio nurseries.
The Heritage Trees program is supported by presenting sponsor Cenovus Energy and supporting sponsors Ohio Liquor and The Lubrizol Foundation.
Program partners include Dawes Arboretum, Cox Arboretum MetroPark, Holden Forests & Gardens, Keep Ohio Beautiful, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Rowe Arboretum and Secrest Arboretum.
Communities selected for Heritage Trees may include county seats or cities participating in the Tree City USA program administered by arborday.org. Mansfield has been a Tree City USA recipient for 31 years.
