There's good news out of Mount Rainier National Park, as the incident-management team that prepares updates daily on the Grand Park 2 and Wonderland Complex fires, known as the Northern Rockies Incident Management Team 2, reported that the Grand Park 2 Fire is now officially 100% contained, all 168 acres of it.
"Firefighters achieved 100% containment and continued patrolling and assessing interior heat, including smoldering duff and residual hotspots near the Huckleberry drainage," the report stated Tuesday.
On Wednesday, the park service updated that the Grand Park 2 Fire has now transitioned fully into "patrol status," with containment lines continuing to be observed from the air.
Rain is on the way for all fires, with cooler temperatures and storm systems moving through the area the rest of this week. Firefighters prepared pumps and supplies at the Sunrise area of the National Park on Wednesday for the expected rain.
The Wonderland Complex fires continue to burn 378 acres and are 0% contained. Due to their harsh geography, they continue to be fought through the air.
The update also stated that Washington state's fire lookouts are playing an enhanced role in tracking and monitoring wildfires.
"Personnel hiked to Fremont Lookout to track fire activity, while others backhauled waste barrels and bear boxes to designated sites in the park," the report read. "Firefighters also assisted with installing remote automated weather stations at both Suntop Lookout and Sunrise. Overhead personnel continued working through suppression‑repair tasks and used vantage points, including the Fremont Lookout, to track interior heat. No visible smoke was reported, and the fire showed no growth."
The Sunrise Visitor Center and the Wonderland Trail remain closed. White River Road to White River Campground and Sunrise Road from the White River Campground to Sunrise Visitor Center are also closed.
The White River Wilderness Information Center is open, and White River Campground is open to those with permits. All trails originating from those park roads and all trails in the Grand Park area continue to be closed until further notice.
