Absecon Island storm pipes in 3 towns receiving $19.7-million fix

Pipe systems that carry rainwater from several communities on Absecon Island into the Atlantic Ocean are to be repaired and, in some cases, extended under a nearly $19.7-million federal contract just issued to a South Jersey company.

When the actual work begins hasn't been determined. But an U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announcement Aug. 27 states that the outfall pipes to be repaired are in Atlantic City, Ventnor and Margate.

Agate Construction Co. of Egg Harbor Township was awarded the contract.

In addition to the outfall pipe work, the contract includes doing repairs to the New Haven vehicle access ramp in Ventnor.

The work is part of the Absecon Island Coastal Storm Risk Management project, which has been active for more than two decades. This 8-mile-long island takes frequent beatings from storms, and the project is meant to diminish human and property casualties.

The targeted outfall pipes are at the following locations.

New Jersey Avenue (Atlantic City).

St. James Place (Atlantic City).

Virginia Avenue (Atlantic City).

California Avenue (Atlantic City).

Jackson Avenue (Ventnor City).
