SANFORD, Maine — A motorist collided with a woman who was using the crosswalk at the corner of Winter Street and Riverside Avenue on the afternoon of Sept. 1.
Once hit, the woman, who was on a bicycle, was dragged a short distance and suffered cuts, scrapes, and abrasions on her legs, according to Sanford police Maj. Mark Dyer.
The woman had been crossing Winter Street behind her friend, who also was on a bicycle, Dyer said. The motorist, a 58-year-old Sanford man, saw the friend but did not see the victim — and, as a result, he struck her with his Toyota when he turned left after idling at a stop sign on Riverside Avenue, police said.
Police officers and an ambulance responded to the scene at around 2:55 p.m. After examining the victim at the scene, an EMT brought her to MaineHealth's campus in Sanford about 20 minutes later, Dyer said.
The vehicle was not damaged by the incident.
Police officers spent about 45 minutes at the scene, interviewing the driver, as well as the victim, her friend, and a motorist and passerby who both had been nearby when the collision occurred.
Dyer said the motorist said he had been wearing flip-flops while driving, which, Dyer noted, "probably contributed to the accident."
Dyer also said the officer asked the driver if he was intoxicated.
"The officer didn't see or smell anything that would prompt more investigation of an OUI," Dyer said.
After his interview with the officer, the motorist continued on his way, according to Dyer.
"No charges or citations are pending," Dyer said.
