One bystander was killed and another wounded in a shooting in Lockport Township Wednesday night, the Will County Sheriff's Office said.
Deputies responded at about 7:54 p.m. in the 200-block of Dellwood Avenue.
Deputies arrived and found a 31-year-old woman and man wounded, the sheriff's office said.
Both were transported to the hospital, where the woman was pronounced dead., police said. The man is expected to recover.
The woman has been identified to the Will County Coroner's Office as Michelle Robinson.
The neighborhood has been left traumatized.
Carmen Holman, who is gun violence survivor herself, lives across the street from where it happened. She said the victim's four children go to school with her children.
"This morning all the kids had to walk past and had to see this whole scene, not see their friends and go to school just because something so tragic happened," Holman said."
A neighbor who did not want to be identified said she heard several loud booms and thought it was fireworks, only to find out it was gunfire. She said one of the shots went through her roof into her son's upstairs bedroom.
"He put his head down and he got back up and the bullet hole came through his closet and lodged over his headboard. You can still see the smoke," she said.
Investigators said their preliminary investigation shows that the victims were merely innocent bystanders who were caught in some sort of crossfire while they were standing outside. Little comfort to people who live here.
"You don't know. How are we supposed to know when to come outside when not to be outside or what to look for? We don't know nothing. We don't know anything. That's like heartbreaking," Holman said.
Parents in the neighborhood said the local school is providing social workers and support for students affected by the shooting.
